Autoclaves are invented to sterilize laboratory equipment using high pressure. Its use technically exceeds the water's boiling point and disinfects things in 15-20 minutes at 120 degrees Celsius. The normal boiling point of water is 100 degrees Celsius. There are small and big autoclaves. One can use either of the two depending on the size of the laboratory equipment that will be sterilized. The smaller one generally looks like a regular pressure cooker and the big one typically looks like an oven.
When autoclaves were invented, it was aimed at killing germs and bacteria from laboratory equipment and other medical instruments that would fit in it. The high pressure it makes boils the water 20 degrees Celsius higher than its normal boiling point. This is a temperature that easily kills microbes and disinfects the items.
The term "autoclave" comes from the Greek word 'auto' meaning self and Latin word 'clavis' meaning key. Together it means self-locking device. The lock of the autoclave contributes to the high pressure inside that makes the air molecules unable to escape. The steam helps in the boiling of water and the killing of microbes. Like some of the pressure cookers, autoclaves have a valve chamber where the steam pressure is monitored to ensure that the steam created is at safe level. Check the internet and read more about autoclaves.
